Section 80D offers tax deductions on health insurance premiums. Learn the exact deduction amounts, who qualifies, and how to maximize your 80D benefit.

Section 80D: Health Insurance is Tax-Deductible

Section 80D of the Income Tax Act allows deductions for health insurance premiums paid by individuals and HUFs. This is one of the most important deductions — it incentivizes health insurance adoption while reducing your tax burden.

Under the new tax regime (effective FY 2023-24), Section 80D deductions are available even if you opt for the new regime — a significant change from the old regime where 80D was one of many deductions you'd need to claim.

Section 80D Deduction Breakdown

For Self, Spouse, and Dependent Children

CoverageDeduction Limit
Individual (below 60 years)₹25,000 per year
Individual (60 years or above)₹50,000 per year
Senior Citizen (60+) self/spouse₹50,000 per year

For Parents (Separate from Self)

CoverageDeduction Limit
Parent(s) below 60 years₹25,000 per year
Parent(s) 60 years or above₹50,000 per year
Both parents above 60 (no health cover for self)₹1,00,000

Preventive Health Check-Up

An additional ₹5,000 deduction is available for preventive health check-ups. This is included within the overall limit (not additive for those below 60) but is often overlooked. Available for self, spouse, children, and parents.

Maximum 80D Deductions You Can Claim

The theoretical maximum 80D deduction is ₹1,00,000 + ₹1,00,000 = ₹2,00,000 if you have senior citizen parents and cover yourself at ₹50,000 + parents at ₹50,000 each.

SituationMax 80D Deduction
Self + spouse (both below 60) + no parents₹25,000 + ₹25,000 = ₹50,000
Self + spouse (both 60+) + no parents₹50,000 + ₹50,000 = ₹1,00,000
Self below 60 + two senior citizen parents₹25,000 + ₹50,000 + ₹50,000 = ₹1,25,000
Self + spouse 60+ + two senior citizen parents₹50,000 + ₹50,000 + ₹50,000 = ₹1,50,000

What Qualifies for 80D

  • Health insurance premium (family floater or individual)
  • Preventive health check-up (for self, spouse, children, parents)
  • Premium paid for senior citizen health policy
  • Contributions to CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme)
  • Reimbursement of medical expenses of senior citizen (if not claimed under any health insurance)

Mode of Payment: Only Digital Counts

For 80D deductions above ₹5,000, the payment must be made by:

  • Debit card
  • Credit card
  • Net banking
  • UPI/BHIM
  • Cheque

Cash payments for health insurance premiums do NOT qualify for 80D deduction. This rule was introduced to promote digital payments and prevent fictitious claims.

Preventive Health Check-Up: What Counts

The ₹5,000 check-up deduction covers:

  • Doctor consultation fees (if part of a comprehensive health check-up)
  • Pathology tests (blood tests, ECG, etc.)
  • Imaging (X-ray, ultrasound)
  • Comprehensive health packages offered by hospitals and diagnostic labs

Individual doctor consultations (not part of a check-up package) for existing ailments are not eligible — the check-up must be preventive, not diagnostic of an existing condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim 80D for my health insurance if I pay with cash?

No. For premiums above ₹5,000, only digital payments (debit/credit card, net banking, UPI) or cheque qualify. Cash payments for health insurance do not qualify for 80D. Always pay your health insurance premium digitally and keep the transaction record as proof.

Can I claim 80D if I pay my parents' health insurance premium?

Yes. You can claim the premium paid for your parents' health insurance as an additional deduction — separate from the deduction for your own family's coverage. This is a common strategy for those whose parents are senior citizens and need coverage but don't have their own policies.

Does Section 80D cover dental treatment?

Yes, if it requires hospitalization. Day-care procedures (requiring less than 24-hour hospitalization) and treatments like dialysis, chemotherapy, and cataract surgery are covered under most health insurance policies and qualify for 80D. Routine dental check-ups or treatment without hospitalization is not covered by health insurance and not deductible under 80D.

Claim Every Rupee

Section 80D is one of the easiest deductions to claim — you pay health insurance anyway to protect your family, so ensure you're claiming the tax benefit too. Pay premiums digitally, maintain records, and file the claim every year. The ₹5,000-50,000 you save in taxes makes health insurance even more cost-effective than it already is.
