A Cash Deposit Machine (CDM) is an automated self-service banking kiosk that allows bank customers to deposit cash into their accounts without needing to visit a bank branch or interact with a teller.

CDMs are typically available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at bank branches and ATM lobby areas. What is a Cash Deposit Machine? Modern CDMs are cardless — you can insert cash directly into the machine. The machine uses bulk note acceptors (BNAs) that can identify and count currency notes automatically. You simply place your cash notes into the input slot, the machine counts them, displays the total, and asks you to confirm. You then enter your account number or scan a QR code linked to your account to complete the deposit. CDMs have transformed cash deposit operations in India. Before CDMs, depositing cash meant waiting in bank queues, filling deposit slips, and relying on a teller to count notes manually. CDMs can accept thousands of notes per minute and immediately credit the depositor's account, eliminating the risk of teller errors and reducing waiting times dramatically. Most CDMs accept all denominations of Indian currency notes — ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200, ₹500, and ₹2,000. Some machines may not accept crumpled, torn, or extremely worn notes. The daily deposit limit at a CDM typically ranges from ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakhs depending on the bank and the customer's account type. Cash deposited through a CDM is credited to the account immediately or within a few hours, though some banks may place a hold on cash deposits above a certain threshold as a fraud prevention measure. A printed receipt with the transaction details, serial numbers of notes deposited, and timestamp is issued as proof of deposit. For businesses that handle a lot of cash — like retail shops, petrol pumps, or kirana stores — CDMs offer a convenient way to deposit daily collections without visiting a branch. Some banks also allow cash deposits at CDMs without a card using the account number and a one-time PIN sent to the registered mobile number, making it accessible even for customers who do not carry their debit cards.
