Section 80D of the Income Tax Act permits a deduction for health insurance premiums paid for self, spouse, dependent children, and parents.
The maximum deduction is ₹25,000 per year for self, spouse, and children, and an additional ₹25,000 for parents below 60 years, or ₹50,000 for senior citizen parents. Taxpayers can also claim up to ₹5,000 for preventive health check-ups within the overall ceiling. The deduction is available only under the old tax regime.
